Talkin' Baseball...and the Market
Time for a little fun and something you just won’t find anywhere
else. How does the winner of the World Series impact share
performance in the months of November and December? It turns
out there is no discernible pattern, but since I took the time to
check it out, I’m running with it anyway.
So following is the Series winner, the Nov / Dec performance in
the S&P 500, and the overall performance in the S&P for that
year.
1997 – Nov / Dec .. +6.1%...Florida over Cleveland . +33.4%
1998 – Nov / Dec .. +11.9%..Yankees over San Diego +28.6%
1999 – Nov / Dec ... +7.5%...Yankees over Atlanta +21.0%
2000 – Nov / Dec -7.6%....Yankees over Mets -9.1%
2001 – Nov /Dec +8.3%....Arizona over Yankees -11.9%
2002 – Nov /Dec -0.7%.....Anaheim over San Fran.. -22.1%
2003 – Nov /Dec +5.8%....Florida over Yankees .. +28.7%
2004 – Nov /Dec +7.2%....Boston over St. Louis .. +10.9%
Now if you can discern something unique from the above, aside
from the fact November and December are normally pretty good
months for the market, drop me a line.
Wall Street History returns in two weeks.
