Coal

With all the talk of oil these days, it’s easy to forget just how
vital coal is in fulfilling our energy needs. Plus, with
advancements in clean-coal technology (an area I’m studying
more on the investment side), the industry is going to be even
more critical in the future.

So I thought we’d look at some real basic facts.

Following are the countries that produce and/or consume at least
5% of the world’s coal.

Production (12/05)

China ......38% of world’s total
USA 20
Australia ...7
India ..7
Russia ...5
So. Africa .5

Consumption (12/05)

China .37%
USA ...20
India 7

1995-2005 Consumption trends (million tons oil equivalent)

China – 695 to 1082
USA – 506 to 575
India – 143 to 213

Proved Reserves (12/05)

USA 27%
Russia ..17
China ...13
India 10
Australia ....9
So. Africa ..5
